An even stranger valley. She guessedthen what had happened. In her excitement over her first appointment and in her impatience toget started in her chosen field she had misjudged her transit co-ordinates and hadinadvertently transmitted herself to one of Chalces primitive neighbors. But which one Obviously it had to be a member of a system near the edge of the galactic lensfor the Chalce binary was remote from the main federated planets. But the transit-unit strappedaround her waist demanded more accurate information than that. If she wanted to transmitherself to Chalce she had to visualize not only the correct Chalce coordinates but thedistance between her present position and her desired destination. To do that she had to knowexactly where she was. Her transit-unit had no memory: it merely accepted data reacted to itand awaited further data. Sarith shivered again. The wind-driven snow clung icily to her facesifted down the back of her thin afternoon suit and melted coldly on her spine. She rememberedthe heavier clothing she had brought along for holiday treks in the Sharsh mountains and shelooked around for her traveling kit. All she saw was snow.
